Six militants killed as Army foils 5th infiltration bid in 3 days

Srinagar, June 9 (PTI): The Army today killed six militants near the Line of Control (LoC) as it foiled fifth infiltration bid from Pakistan into Kashmir in three days, raising to 12 the total number of infiltrators gunned down during this period. The six militants were killed in Uri sector during a counter-infiltration operation launched yesterday after the troops detected movement of ultras trying to sneak into the valley, an Army official said. With this operation, the total number of infiltrating militants killed over the last three days in various sectors has gone up to 12.

Couple shot dead in a failed robbery bid in Punjab

Ludhiana, June 9 (PTI): In a robbery bid gone awry, three unidentified men fatally shot a financer and his wife at their house in Durgi locality here today, police said. Two of the miscreants barged into the couple’s (Sunil Gupta, 49, and Neelam Gupta, 45) house, while the other waited downstairs with a motorcycle, they said. Upon hearing the gunshots, a crowd gathered outside the house. “One of the accused, in an attempt to flee the crowd, jumped from the first floor and got his legs fractured,” he said. “People caught hold of him while his accomplices managed to escape on the bike,” the DCP said.

Court orders juvenile to clean school premises, teach students

Sheikhpura (Bihar), June 9 (PTI): A juvenile court today ordered a teenager to clean school premises and teach dalit students for three months to atone for using a proxy to write his matriculation examination two years ago. The incident had come to light after a fake examinee was caught by invigilators for writing examination for the teenager, he said. While the fake examinee was arrested for writing examination for another student and his case was being heard by a local court, the teenager too was detained and lodged in a remand home, Khan said.

Man booked for allegedly raping woman, minor daughter in Gurgaon

Gurgaon , June 9 (PTI): A Delhi resident has been booked for allegedly raping a 35-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter, Gurgaon Police said today. The woman told police she met the accused, a resident of Amar Colony in Delhi, at a Gurgaon market a few months ago. The woman, who is a widow also told that over the next few days, the accused raped her several times and filmed the act. Ashish later raped her 15-year-old daughter and filmed the crime similarly to the woman, Mr Sehgal said.

Will probe if political science paper leak was deliberate: Bengal Minister

Kolkata, June 9 (PTI): West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee today said that the government would examine if the leak of political science question paper was deliberately done as an act of conspiracy or was due to negligence. Confirming the leak of the political science question paper at a degree college yesterday, affiliated to the Calcutta University, Mr Chatterjee said that the government was keeping a watch on the situation.

Prez Pranab launches ‘Selfie with Daughter’ app

New Delhi, June 9 (PTI): President Pranab Mukherjee today launched ‘Selfie with Daughter’, a mobile application aimed at raising awareness about female foeticide and sex selection. President Mukherjee asked people to take photographs with their daughters and upload them on the app to make the campaign a success. The aim of the campaign is to motivate society to feel proud to be parents of a girl child, which will result in improving child sex ratio. The president expressed hope that this would eventually help in dealing with problems arising out of gender imbalance.
