KOHIMA — Kewhimia Zhavipfüko Krotho (KZK), an association of Angami women of Kohima village from 15 years and above, held its general conference on Saturday at KVC hall in Kohima.

Narrating the history of KZK, Vitshülieü Sekhose, retired deputy director general of North East Doordarshan (TV), Guwahati, highlighted the various activities undertaken by the association to promote and preserve their culture and traditions.

She has emphasised on the proper way of wearing traditional attires and expressed satisfaction that even in the schools and colleges, cultural events are now being held to promote Naga cultural practices which are passed down to the present generation by the forefathers.

She reminded KZK members on the need to give necessary corrections related to their cultural attires. Mentioning that Nagas are gifted in making their own garments, she stressed that people should be proud and not be ashamed of wearing one’s own traditional attires.

She apprised how the state government is striving to promote the rich heritage of the Nagas.

While the speaking of English has become vital globally and Hindi nationally, she also emphasised on the necessity to continue practicing and promoting Tenyidie, the common language of Angami tribe so that their own mother tongue is not forgotten. She further apprised how local languages are given emphasis with the introduction of the New Education Policy (NEP).

Also speaking at the conference, Pekruzeü Sekhose, retired secretary of Social Welfare Mission and director of State Resources Nagaland, stressed on the issues of women’s role and means of making a living. Informing that women empowerment was first introduced in the year 2000, she underscored the need to retrospect the position of women in the present day.

While women were confined with household chores in the past, she emphasised on the importance of economic empowerment for women now. She made a mention that it is not the men folk but the women themselves who are not able to support one another. She, therefore, reminded the need to respect and honour one another for the uplift of the women themselves in the society.

Stating that women need to encourage one another to make impact in the society, she reminded not to forget their male counterparts without whom they cannot proceed ahead.

Mengubeinuo Liezietsu, president of KZK chaired the inaugural session, while Viphretuonuo Sorhie, associate pastor of Khedi Baptist Kehou, invoked God’s blessing and Neimenuo Rame, vice president of KZK, led the second session.

Songs were presented by Rüsokhrie Krotho and Truism.
