Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority warns of potential flash floods
DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a weather alert, warning of heavy rainfall and potential flash floods across the state due to the approaching cyclonic storm Remal over coastal Bangladesh.
Due to this cyclonic storm, overcast heavy rain to moderate light rain is likely to occur throughout the districts of the state. Squally winds are expected to reach speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, it said in a press release on Monday.
While the cyclonic storm system is likely to move north-northeastwards and gradually weaken into a deep depression by the evening of May 27, “moderate flash flood risk over few rivers and foothill areas of the state is likely to occur during the next 24 hours due to persistent rainfall”, it warned.
In light of the potential hazards, the NSDMA, which is under the Home Department, urged the public to exercise caution and avoid venturing near rivers and lakes to prevent drowning and other casualties due to flash floods, landslides induced by the persistent rainfall.
“The NSDMA also requests all the district disaster management authorities and other line departments to be on alert to attend to any eventualities and save lives and properties,” it added.
