Nagaland: ‘Science is applied in every aspect of our life’

Science is applied in every aspect of our life
Resource persons and students of Salesian College of Higher Education on the occasion of International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Friday.

Dimapur, Feb. 11 (EMN): To create awareness on the vital and critical role of women and girls in the development of science and technology, Salesian College of Higher Education (SCHE), Dimapur, celebrate the 7th International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11.

Chairing the programme, Loreni Sophia from community health initiative (CHI) highlighted the importance of the day and stated that to celebrate science, “we don’t have to be a science student or a scientist, because science is applied in every aspect of our life.”

The main speaker of the day, Tsino Viya, assistant geologist from the directorate of Geology and Mining, spoke on the theme “Equity, diversity and inclusion: Water unites us.” She stressed on the importance of water conservation and judicious use of ground water which serve as the best source of drinking water. Stating that ground water is limited, she stressed on the need to take care and use water judiciously.

The girl students of the college were given awareness on menstrual hygiene and management by Alokali Zhimomi, author of the book “Menopause: Embracing your midlife.” She enlightened the students on the 10 commandments of menstrual hygiene and concluded her talk by saying, “Menstruation is not a problem to be solved, but menstruation is a life, a blessing, so embrace it and celebrate it to survive.”

There was yoga demonstration session by Orentsani Kikon and her team of Aesthetic Fitness in order to cope with menstrual health. The exercise was done along with the students.

Report from the college stated that Chandeno Murry spoke on the importance of celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science. She stated that the day was introduced by UNESCO in order to create awareness to the women and girls on the vital and critical role they could play in the development of science and technology.

Shikani S Aye, assistant professor and coordinator of women’s grievance cell of the college, proposed the vote of thanks. It concluded with free donation of sanitary pads by Loreni Sophia to the girl students in the college.
