Nagaland: SASRD conducts one-day farmer’s training programme
Dimapur, March 11 (EMN): SASRD, Nagaland University (NU) under NEH Plan conducted a one-day farmer’s training programme on “Scientific protection technology of summer vegetable crops” at Beisumpuikam village, Peren district on March 9.
The aim of the training programme was to create awareness as well as to help the farmers identify the common pests and diseases of summer vegetable crops so as to understand their crop health and properly manage them with eco-friendly tactics, a press release informed.
Session I on “Insect management of summer vegetable crops” was delivered by Dr. Waluniba, assistant professor, department of Entomology, SASRD, NU, where he emphasised on the common insect pests that are found in vegetable garden like stem borers, fruit borers, white fly, aphids and how to manage it with the use of organic insecticides/pesticides or even with the locally available home items like turmeric and ash.
The farmers were also enlightened with the preparation of NSKE so that the farmers can prepare by themselves and use it in their vegetable garden.
The technical session II on “Disease management of summer vegetable crops” was delivered by Dr. Nayan Kishore Adhikary, assistant pathologist, AICRP (VC), dept. of Horticulture, SASRD.
He highlighted the various common diseases that are attacking farmer’s field like damping off, bacterial wilt, fusarium wilt, leaf sop, alternaria and how to control or manage them organically. The farmers were also informed on the integrated disease management system and how to adopt it in their field.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Moakala Changkiri, scientist, AICRP (VC), SASRD, NU. Tadibe, the village chairman of Beisumpuikam, on behalf of all the farmers expressed their gratitude to AICRP-vegetable crops, department of Horticulture, SASRD, NU for organising the training programme in their village and expressed their willingness to participate and with full cooperation even in the future programmes.
The training was attended by about 100 farmer participants.
Mention may be made that ICAR, with an aim to provide services for decent living of the farmers in Nagaland, has identified five aspirational blocks/villages in four districts of Nagaland — Mon, Longleng, Wokha and Peren — for monitoring and promoting vegetable cultivation among tribals.
