Nagaland records 31 cases of crimes against children in 2020

Dimapur, Sep. 29 (EMN): Nagaland reported two murder cases of children and one case of murder with rape in 2020, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

The data revealed that the two murder cases of children were reported from Dimapur district and the other case from Wokha district.

Among the north-eastern states, Assam reported the highest murder cases of children with 24 and six cases of murder with rape. Tripura reported six murder cases and one murder with rape; Arunachal Pradesh- three murder cases; Meghalaya- three murder with rape cases; Manipur- two murder cases; while Mizoram and Sikkim reported zero cases.

According to the NCRB report, a total of 31 cases of crimes against children were reported in the state in 2020. Dimapur district reported highest cases of crimes against children with 14, followed by Kohima (five cases), Wokha, Zunheboto and Wokha (three cases each), Mokokchung and Mon (two cases each), Phek and Kiphire (one case each), while no such cases were reported in the remaining districts.

The NCRB report stated a total of 1, 28, 531 cases of crimes against children were registered in India during 2020, showing a decrease of 13.2% over 2019 (1, 48, 090 cases). Meanwhile, major crime heads under ‘Crime Against Children’ during 2020 were kidnapping and abduction (42.6%) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (38.8%) including child rape. The crime rate registered per lakh children population is 28.9 in 2020 compared to 33.2 in 2019.
