Dimapur, April 1 (EMN): Akato Chophi-led NSCN/GPRN has greeted the Konyak, Phom and Chang Nagas on the occasion of ‘Aoleang Mongyu (Konyak) Phom Monyu (Phom) and Kundaglun (Chang)’ festivals, which is celebrated during April 1-3.

A NSCN/GPRN’s statement through its MIP stated that ‘Aoleang Mongyu’ is a major festival of the Konyak Nagas, which is celebrated in the first week of Aoleang lee (April). The festival is celebrated to mark the end of the old year and to welcome the new year beginning with spring. The Konyaks wish for fruitful year and a bountiful harvest during Aoleang festival.

It also stated that the ‘Phom Monyü’ festival is celebrated by the Phom Nagas to celebrate the arrival of new year with the beating of log drums with distinct tune traditionally called “Lan Nyangshem.” One interesting feature of the Monyü festival is that men folk shows respect to their married daughters or sisters with specially prepared food and rice beer. It shows the respect womenfolk have in the Phom households.

The ‘Kundaglun’ festival is celebrated by the Chang Nagas to invoke blessings for a successful and bountiful year and forge ahead with renewed strength and vigor.

It stated that the Konyak, Phom and Chang Nagas are among the Naga ‘Warrior tribes,’ who are all known for their bravery and courage. As they celebrate their respective festivals, the NSCN/GPRN wished that the bond of brotherhood continue to remain strong and also continue to be the harbinger of peace and unity between the Naga families.
