DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Indigenous People’s Forum (NIPF) has expressed shock over the reports of a non indigenous person being appointed as a gaon bura (GB), saying that the issue can’t be taken lightly as it can have a negative effect on the future of the indigenous people of Nagaland.

The NIPF said this in a press statement amid the controversy over the appointment of Abdul Kayum Talukdar as the gaon bura (GB) of New Market, Dimapur.

The forum said that the government of Nagaland should “pull up its sleeves and activate its mechanism to check if such appointment has been made in the past or be prepared to prevent such appointment in the future”.

“It is high time to wake up from our deep slumber and look at the pity conditions of some of the NE States where non indigenous people have taken over or are taking over the indigenous people in all the governing set up of the state and have turned the indigenous people to be a minority in their own state,” read the statement.

It called for initiation of strict action, including termination if any government official is found responsible for illegal appointment of any non indigenous person in any government offices and institutions of Nagaland.

The forum also called upon “every indigenous citizens of Nagaland to be vigilant and initiate legal steps to protect the Indigenous people of the state irrespective of tribes and communities”.
