Dimapur, Oct. 17 (EMN): The felling of trees along the Supermarket stretch of road in Dimapur began on Monday, following an order issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur Sachin Jaiswal.

The order came close on the heels of a tragic incident where two persons were killed and six others injured, including two serious, after strong winds uprooted two trees in the busy market place on October 12.

An official from the Forest department shared that there are about 405 trees along the stretch, and the DC had given one week to cut down all the trees. He shared that a permit has been given to environmentalist Ronika Miachieo and chief manager of Waste Management, Amos Ezung, to take the charge of cutting down the trees.

He added that the trees located in that area are ā€˜Cā€™ class species, and therefore the two in-charge will make forest royalty payment to the government treasury after cutting down all the trees.

He clarified that the Forest department and Dimapur Municipal Council are only providing logistic support and are not in-charge of the tree felling or the tasks after.

The DC, in the order, also prohibited vehicular movement from Old Dhansiri Bridge till Nagarjan Police Point from 5 am to 5 pm from October 17 to the 24th.

It may be mentioned that the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) under the Home department on October 14, announced a compensation of INR 4 lakh each for the families of two persons who were killed in the tragic incident and INR 12,700 each to two seriously injured persons.

Power shutdown in three feeders

In view of the ongoing felling of trees at Supermarket in Dimpur which commenced on Monday, the department of Power, Dimapur, informed that three feeders in the city would be shut down from 5 am to 5 pm from October 17 to the 24th.

A source from the department informed that the three feeders — 33 kilovolt (kV) and 11 kilovolt Supermarket; 11 kV Rajbari and 11kV Naharbari — will be shut down from 5 am to 5 pm for smooth operation of the vegetation clearance in Supermarket.
