Nagaland among states with least prison population

Nagaland is among the 10 states and union territories (UTs) in India with least prison population, standing in the ninth position, according to the data published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

According to nationwide current prison population provided by NCRB, Lakshadweep has least prisoners with just four, followed by Ladakh with 16; Dadra and Nagar Haveli- 76; Manipur- 92; Daman and Diu- 133; Andaman and Nicobar- 254; Sikkim- 279; Arunachal Pradesh- 487; Nagaland– 668; and Chandigarh- 859. 

The total number inmates reported at the time of filing this report on August 4 was 5,37,900 with 652 admitted on the day and 1461 released. The number of admission and released in Nagaland was nil on Wednesday, as per the NCRB data.

The NCRB’s national prisons information portal reported that currently, the number of inmates inside Central Jail Dimapur is 176, all males, and 84 inmates in sub-jail Dimapur with seven female and the rest male.

As per the report, there are 61 inmates in the district jail Kohima; 22 in sub-jail Kiphire; 16 in sub-jail Mon; 30 in sub-jail Peren; and 43 in district jail Tuensang.

In district jail Mokokchung, there were only 184 inmates out of which, three are female between the age group of 20-50 years. 

Sub-jail Wokha has 16 inmates, and sub-jail Zunheboto has 21 inmates as on Wednesday.

According to NCRB, Uttar Pradesh had the highest nationwide current prison population of 118410 till the time of filing this report on Aug. 4 2021, followed by Bihar with 62616.

The other states in the top seven nationwide current prison populations were Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana, Punjab and Assam.
