Motor Vehicles department holds meeting over rise in road accidents
DIMAPUR — In light of an increase in road accidents in the state, the majority of which are fatal or critical, the Motor Vehicles department held a meeting on Tuesday at the conference hall of the Transport Commissionerate in Kohima.
A DIPR report mentioned that Temjenmenba, advisor for Transport and Technical Education, presided over the meeting.
It was attended by department officers, including regional and district transport officers, as well as assistant regional transport officers from both the general and enforcement divisions.
Taking a very serious note of the road accidents in recent times, the advisor impressed upon the officers to put in strengthened efforts and programmes to prevent road accidents. He noted that accidents lead to the loss of precious lives and often incur huge economic costs.
The officials must stringently enforce all the provisions of the MV Act to ensure that vehicles are perfectly fit for road use with all valid documents, he said, insisting that drivers must be well-sensitised and periodical tests must be conducted to upgrade their skills.
Transport commissioner Elias T Lotha gave an overview of the department as the ‘lead agency’ for road safety in the state, thanking the advisor for his time and sharing his concern about road safety issues in the state.
He also highlighted the department’s current initiatives in collaboration with line departments through the adoption of a multi-pronged strategy based on the four Es (enforcement, engineering, emergency services, and education) of road safety.
Temjenmenba assured his support and assistance for the progress and strengthening of the department and called upon all to adopt a holistic approach to prevent road accidents in the state.
