More rain predicted for Nagaland; Dzüdza landslide yet to be cleared

DIMAPUR — Nagaland will likely experience cloudy heavy rainfall in almost all districts until August 29. These showers may be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in isolated places, updated the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).

Heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of Chümoukedima, Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Niuland, Peren and Wokha during this period, it stated, adding that other districts may experience cloudy moderate rain.

While calling for necessary precautionary measures and caution against lightning strikes and gale winds that may disrupt communication and connectivity, the NSDMA stated that lowland and foothill regions, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit and Tuli are vulnerable to inundation, waterlogging and flash floods due to the potential high precipitation in the hills.

In this regard, it urged the public to avoid any eventualities during this period and requested all the district disaster management authorities and other line departments to be on alert to save lives and properties during this monsoon period.

The NSDMA also informed that some district headquarters, including Kohima, and other blocks may be cut off due to landslides caused by higher volumes of precipitation. Therefore, key line departments responsible for the maintenance of public infrastructure may need to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, sources said that the landslide area near Dzüdza Bridge along the National Highway-29 remains closed to traffic on Saturday as continued rain hampers the debris clearance efforts at the site.

Efforts have been made to open the affected area for one-way traffic but persistent rain continues to derail the plan.
