Mon district to boycott Republic Day celebrations

Dimapur, Jan. 23 (EMN): Mon district will be boycotting the upcoming Republic Day celebrations on January 26, in protest against the Oting incident on Dec. 4 and 5 that claimed the lives of 14 innocent people.
Confirming this to Eastern Mirror, president of Konyak Union Howing Konyak said that although the chief guest and the police personnel who are deputed for the Republic Day celebration will not be prohibited, there will be no public participation.
‘Although this is not a forced boycott, the public in the Konyak area will be abstaining from the Republic Day celebration in Mon district,’ he affirmed.
There is no such directive (from ENPO) and even if such non-participation is carried out in other districts on January 26, there will be no “public participation” in Mon district, he said.
However, the programme and arrival of the chief guest will not be prohibited, he reiterated. The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) had a meeting on Sunday, however ‘the organisation is yet to come to a decisive agreement, which will be updated soon’, informed a source.
