A market shed for farmers has been inaugurated at Sungkomen ward under Mokokchung district. The shed was constructed under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) programme for the year 2015-2016 by the department of Agriculture. The completed shed was handed over to Mokokchung Village on Wednesday, March 23 during a small ceremony marking the event.
The newly-constructed market shed was dedicated by the Mokokchung Baptist Church (MBA) Pastor Supo in the presence of village council members and departmental officials. The market will be operated every evening.
During a short programme today, the District Agriculture officer Nungsangkaba informed that the market shed was constructed to facilitate farmers in selling ‘their freshly harvested organic vegetables.’
Expressing hope that the Mokokchung village council would manage the market shed ‘judiciously,’ the official said that the newly-constructed facility, located along the highway, would enable farmers to directly bring their fresh vegetables from their farms and sell them ‘benefiting both farmers and the customers.’
In his address, the chairman of the Mokokchung village council, Imonungba, lauded the Agriculture department for their ‘thoughtful gesture.’ He said that the department had ‘fulfilled the aspiration of the local farmers who were earlier marketing their good on open area without any shed.’
Also, he said that the council will be managing the market shed and will be opened not only for the villagers but also ‘for the people, who are in need for such avenues to earn their livelihood.’
