Mirabai Chanu inaugurates machine at RIMS

Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu inaugurated a new arthroscopy machine at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), a premier medical institute in Northeast on Monday.

Manipur had already started to introduce the MD course in Sport Medicine at RIMS since last year’s academic session. The move will benefit hundreds of sports persons not only in Manipur but in the entire Northeast.

In 2019, the Doctorate of Medicine course for Nephrology was also introduced at RIMS and a new dialysis centre with a capacity of 10-bed was incorporated. Now, the dialysis centre is providing the service to many.

Established in 1972, RIMS, the only medical institute in the entire Northeast and West Bengal to figure amongst the top 40 medical institutions and universities of India, has so far produced 3,454 doctors, 1842 specialists, 61 clinical psychologists and 115 Bachelor of Dental Surgery doctors besides 193 BSc nursing.

RIMS began to produce 350,000 litres of medical oxygen daily, when its shortage has taken lives of many Covid-19 patients across the country, swept by the second wave of the disease.

Recently RIMS was awarded the “District Green Champion” title by the Union Ministry of Education, department of Higher Education for the year 2020-21 for successfully setting up the Swachhta Action Plan Committee and adopting and implementing best practices in the areas of sanitation, hygiene, waste management, water management, energy management and greenery management.
