IMPHAL — Manipur has so far reported a total of 746 confirmed dengue positive cases, the highest since last few years.

Addressing a press conference in Imphal on Tuesday, state Director (health services) Dr. Kh. Sasheekumar Mangang said that the increase in state’s population, rise in number of households, unplanned urbanisation, changing climate pattern besides current crisis, etc. could be among the important reasons for the increase of dengue cases in the last 15-20 years.

“In an average, dengue cases are on the rise every year,” he said.

The state reported around 100 dengue cases in 2018 against 500 plus in 2022, Dr. Sasheekumar said.

Imphal West district (497) reported the highest number of cases while Imphal East district reported 126 cases. No Dengue cases have been reported in Pherzawl and Tamenglong districts.

However the death rate because of dengue cases is still low. The health officials have taken up source reduction efforts at 320 houses apart from conducting fogging exercises across 317 localities and distribution of 23,000-24,000 mosquito nets with chemicals, he added.

So far three persons have died because of suspected dengue cases in the state, according to state nodal officer Dr. S Gopal Singh of National centre for vector borne disease control.

At present 43 percent of dengue-2 and 57 percent of dengue-4 serotypes are widespread in the state of Manipur, he said.

Dengue fever is a viral disease spread by mosquitoes that is caused by the dengue virus. The virus is primarily spread by the bite of the Aedes mosquito, which is common in tropical and subtropical climates throughout Asia and other parts of the globe.
