Manipur observes 86th Martyr Day of Haipou Jadonang

Imphal, August 29 (EMN): The 86th Martyr Day of freedom fighter Haipou Jadonang was widely observed in Manipur and other parts of NE states on Tuesday.
Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla in a message on the occasion said that on this day of his death anniversary, let us remember the sacrifice made by Haipou Jadonang and follow his values for a peaceful and prosperous society. He was Rongmei Naga spiritual leader and political activist from Manipur, the then British India. He established heraka religious movement and was referred as the ‘messiah king’ of the Nagas, she said. His movement was widespread in the Zeliangrong territory before the switch to Christianity.
In January 1931, the British received reports that Jadonang was planning to declare war against them. On February 19, 1931, he was arrested and imprisoned at Silchar, and a month later on March 19, he was brought to Imphal. On June 13, 1931, Jadonang was declared guilty of the murder of four traders and subsequently on August 29, 1931, Jadonang was hanged to death ‘for defiance against colonial rulers’ on the bank of Nambul river, where his statue stands today.
To remember the legendary leader, many people turned up to pay floral tribute at the statue of legendary freedom fighter at Haipou Jadonang Park at Keishampat here on Tuesday.
Meanwhile Zeliangrong Students Union (ZSU) Silchar also commemorated the 86th Martyr Day of freedom fighter Haipou Jadonang at Silchar.
ZSU Silchar President Moses Newme, Sibu Kamei of women college Silchar, Dr ID Raguibou,Philip Kamei,Ms Tesfaye Bezabih from Ethiopia also shared their thoughts during the day’s observation, according to a release.
There are also reports of holding the observation at Zeliangriong areas of Koirengei,Tamenglong headquarters,Nungba, Puiluan village and others.
