Manipur landslide: Death toll rises to 54; 7 still untraceable

Imphal, July 10 (EMN): The death tollhas gone up to 54 after two more bodies were recovered on the thirteenth-day of search operations at the Manipur landslide hit areas. Seven others are still untraceable.  

The landslide which is said to be the first of such magnitude in the state’s history, hit the railway construction camp at Marangching part 5 areas and the 107 Territorial Army (TA) camps of the Indian army deployed at the area for protecting the construction site on June 29.

A senior state government official who is monitoring the situation from Noney district headquarters during a telephonic enquiry said that the search team has recovered two more bodies on Tuesday.

With the day’s fresh recovery, so far 54 bodies of the 79 confirmed victims have recovered while 7 are still missing. Earlier 18 injured persons were rescued by the search and rescue team composed of army, NDRF, SDRF, civil police and others.

It may be mentioned that Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh had already announced to provide ex-gratia of INR 5 lakh to the next of kin of those deceased and INR 50 thousand to the injured persons.
