DIMAPUR — A man was shot in the leg by unidentified assailants at NST Colony in Dimapur on Thursday evening, sparking outrage and prompting calls for increased security.

The victim, identified as Rameshwar Sharma, a staff of Ankit Transport, located in NST Colony, was said to be on his way to the washroom around 6:30 pm when two assailants opened fire, striking him in the leg.

The bullet pierced through one leg and caused injuries to the other, NST Council Secretary Pikato Chishi told Eastern Mirror.

Chishi added that the assailants fled the scene immediately after the shooting, which took place near Hotel City Inn.

Police arrived at the location and cordoned off the area, initiating an investigation into the incident.

Attempts made by this newspaper to reach the Dimapur Police PRO for further details went unsuccessful till the time of filing this report.

The victim was rushed to District Hospital Dimapur and is reported to be in stable condition, despite sustaining serious injuries.

Responding to the incident, the Joint Council Forum of Churches Colony, NST Colony and Middle Point, joined by concerned residents, issued a statement condemning the shooting.

It said that the incident was a stark reminder of the violence and lawlessness plaguing the society, especially at a time when the “entire Naga community is united in its quest for peace, reconciliation, and development”.

Urging the authorities to conduct a thorough and swift investigation into the incident to bring the perpetrators to justice, it also appealed to the public for any information that could aid the investigation.

Further, the forum stated that such incidents breed fear and insecurity among citizens and pledged its commitment to creating a peaceful environment free from violence.
