Man sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment for rape in Nagaland

DIMAPUR: Principal District and Sessions Judge, Kohirna, Duvelu Vero has sentenced one person to 14 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a 55-year-old woman at Rusoma village in Nagaland more than three years ago.

The accused will serve imprisonment in District Jail Kohima, as per the order issued on June 13.

According to a press release received here on Wednesday, the incident happened near Rusoma village on October 13 in 2019 when the victim was returning home from her cattle shed, following which the victim’s brother filed a complaint against the accused, Vekhota aka Alex, for rape, robbery, criminal assault and criminal intimidation.

On receiving the FIR, a case was registered with the Kohima Women Police Station and an investigation was initiated by the unarmed branch sub inspector (UBSI). Tsuponi Tsukru and the prosecution case was conducted in the court by public prosecutor Sashimongla, said the update.

“While pronouncing the judgment in the open court, the Judge stated that, the prosecution has proved all the charges U/S 376 (1)/356/392/506/1PC beyond all reasonable doubt. The accused was sentenced to undergo 14 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of INR1000,” it said, adding that the accused will undergo simple imprisonment of two months in default of fine payment.

‘The accused will undergo three years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of INR 500; and in default of payment of the fine to undergo one month simple imprisonment under section 392 of the IPC. The accused will undergo one year rigorous imprisonment U/S 506/IPC. The sentence will run concurrently,’ it added.

The Judge also recommended compensation to the children of the victim (deceased) to the state government under the victim’s compensation scheme through the secretary of legal service authority of Kohima district.
