Man arrested for attempt to ‘kidnap and rape’

Dimapur, August 20 (EMN): A 30-year-old man was arrested in Dimapur on Sunday in a case related to alleged attempt to kidnap, rape and murder, police officials said.
The accused identified as Tohuto, a resident of 5th Mile Model village Dimapur is said to have attempted to molest a 13-year old girl when she was returning home around 7.30 am after attending her Sunday School class in Chekiye village area.
According to police, the accused came in a vehicle and on seeing the girl returning home alone grabbed the girl by her neck and covered her mouth. Initially struggling to free herself, the girl managed to raise an alarm and the panicked accused fled the scene.
Earlier prior to the incident, when the girl was at Sunday School compound, the accused had called out the girl on the pretext of some of her friends looking for her. She came out only to find none of her friends and went back inside, the PRO said.
The accused accompanied by his friend returned to the same spot on a motorbike in search of his phone which he probably must have dropped, said the PRO. By the time, the village community who had been alerted had gathered and the girl could identify the accused. He was apprehended and brought to the village council hall. After an interrogation by the village council, the accused was handed over to the police.
An FIR for attempt to molest, kidnap, rape and murder has been filed by the girl’s family against the accused and he is under the police custody while the case is under investigation, informed police.
