An Executive Magistrate is leading a probe into the alleged custodial death of an accused at R. K. Pur police station in Gomati district on Friday morning. Nurul Islam, 42, was declared brought dead when police took him to a hospital a day after his detention on charge of threatening a PWD staff. Family members claimed the deceased was tortured to death by a few police officials and his body bore several injury marks. Nurul Islam was a resident of Udaipur, headquarters of Gomati district, 65 km south of Agartala and was president of a local club.
The police declared torture and maintained all legal procedures would be maintained in investigation. Senior police officers have been claiming that the accused died of massive heart attack he suffered in the lock-up.
An executive member is involved in the probe and all procedures are being followed including NHRC directives”, Gomati district Superintendent of Police Prabir Majumder told The Hindu by phone.
He said they are expecting post mortem report on Saturday.
Mr. Majumder who met family members and protesting locals outside the police station denied any foul play on part of police.
Tripura police had earlier faced serious queries from the NHRC and human rights groups over incidents of custodial deaths in 2010 and 2013 in separate police stations. In response to their recommendations they took up task to install CCTV cameras in all police stations of the state.
