Longleng administration bans sale of expired goods

DIMAPUR — Referring to Section 273 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860, the Longleng district administration has banned sale of noxious food or drink (expired/ damaged) with immediate effect.

A DIPR report stated that whoever sells or offers or exposes for sale as food or drink, which has been rendered or has become noxious or is in a state unfit for food or drink would be punished with imprisonment for a term which might extend to six months or with fine which might extend upto INR 1000 or with both.

It reminded that the general provision under Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006 provides prohibition for selling, storing/ distribution of unsafe/ sub-standard food/ misbranded food products/ unhygienic or unsanitary processing or manufacturing of food.

It added that Section 25 and 26 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 empanels penalty provisions for use of nonstandard weight or measure and alteration of weight and measure.

Meanwhile, it also referred to Section 124 of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023, which empowers the urban local body to levy sanitation fee, license fee and utility services charges.

The administration has directed all concerned individuals, institutions, commercial establishments to adhere to the relevant regulations/ by law as established with regard to the above in the interest of the public/ consumers services.

It further informed that necessary inspection would be conducted on regular interval and cautioned that any individual/ establishments found in contravention of the above would be liable for penalty as deemed under the relevant Acts/ regulation.
