Commerce department of Livingstone Foundation International College (LFIC), Dimapur, organised a one-day national seminar on Friday at the college auditorium on the topic “Rural agricultural extension: A catalyst for alleviating poverty through sustainable farming and averting food crisis.” The seminar was sponsored by the NABARD.
An update from the college stated that the inaugural session was chaired by assistant professor of Commerce, Dipika Agarwal, with Tiakala Ao, general manager of NABARD regional office, Dimapur, as the guest of honour.
It stated that Tiakala has highlighted the works and goals of NABARD and stressed on the major issue of land holding in agriculture as local farmers hold small lands which make it difficult for them to acquire modern ways and means of agriculture.
The inaugural programme was followed with two technical sessions with Dr. Sosang Longkumer, director of Konger Agritech Pvt. Ltd, Nagaland, and Dr. Tabassum Khan, assistant professor of Commerce at Unity College, Dimapur, as the resource persons.
It stated that Dr. Sosang highlighted the various kinds of mushrooms and also presented scenarios of mushroom cultivation in India and Nagaland, while Dr. Tabassum highlighted the curve of climate change over the years and how it is affecting biodiversity. She further stressed on the importance of negating the amount of greenhouse gases through green farming.
The technical session featured paper presentations from various faculties and research scholars from different colleges and universities.
The valedictory programme was chaired by Avikali K Chishi, assistant professor and head of Political Science department, with Fr. Sajan Joseph, executive director of Development Association of Nagaland (DAN), as the guest of honour.
Report stated that Fr. Joseph, in his speech, has encouraged the gathering to open their minds to the many opportunities available in the sphere of agriculture and to be self-sufficient by utilising and enhancing the local products at hand.
