Indian Railways is observing “Level Crossing Awareness Week” from 6th to 10th June, 2016 and “International Level Crossing Awareness Day” on 10th, June, 2016 to promote safety awareness among its staff and public at large. Lumding Division of Northeast Frontier Railway is making an all-out effort to make its 260 numbers of Level Crossing Gates (Manned & Unmanned) safer and less prone to accident by undertaking safety drive regularly and with a special vigor for the upcoming awareness week and the International awareness day.
An approximate of 40% train accidents and 66% fatalities occur at the level crossing gates, across the country. To combat these manmade and avoidable accidents, the Indian Railway has come up with a concept of “3Es” (Education, Engineering and Enforcement).Accordingly, the Lumding Division spares no effort in ensuring smooth road surface and proper maintenance of Level crossing apparatus including interlocking and signaling gears along with round the clock staffing by deputing trained and disciplined Gatemen at the manned level crossing and proper warning and indication board at unmanned level crossing. Gate Mitras are being engaged to act as friendly guide to the road users at the unmanned Level crossings. Besides, efforts are also being made to eliminate Level Crossing by constructing Road over Bridge & Road under Bridge.
The Lumding Division has also stepped up its enforcement drive against violators of safety norms at Level Crossing Gate as provided by Railway Act 1989. Public awareness and education has been accorded a primary focus. Regularly Pamphlets/Hand bill, Safety Awareness Campaign, Road show, Nukkad Natak etc. for the road users are being organized with the assistance of Bharat Scout & Guide, NGO’s, School Students, Police and District administration. “The Level Crossing Awareness Week“ and “the International Level Crossing Awareness Day” will be observed by vigorously organizing such awareness programs at numbers of important stations and at numbers of identified accident prone areas. Thousands of SMS text will be send out randomly urging everyone to be safe at Level crossing.
As your safety is our Motto and life is precious, the Division urged you to observe the following safety tips while passing

(a) Manned Level Crossings:
 Stop your Vehicle at appropriate distance of the Gate. Do not be in hurry.
 Do not try to pass over or under the Gate, if closed. You may
end up disturbing level crossing apparatus and gears.
 Closure of Gate itself indicates probability of moving trains at any moment.
 Obey all rules and assist with Gatemen on duty, otherwise you may be punishable under Railway act.
(b) Unmanned Level Crossing:
 Reduce speed of your vehicle at least 20 meters away from the Gate.
 Stop your vehicle at appropriate distance of Railway track. Look out both sides of Railway Track listening to the whistling of trains. Pass cautiously through the level crossing looking ahead for train movement in both directions.
 While passing through unmanned level crossing, ensure security of your vehicle yourself.
 During passing through unmanned level crossing, be cautious and observe strictly the Railway Act to secure yourselves.
