Landslides, mudslides wreak havoc in Choklangan village
DIMAPUR— Landslides and mudslides caused by monsoon rains swept away two houses, destroyed paddy fields and blocked roads in Choklangan village under Noklak district on Sunday.
Choklangan Students’ Union (CSU) in a press release informed that two houses in the village were swept away by mudslide in the wee hours of Sunday at around 1 am. However, there was no report of loss of life or injury apart from damage “done to the houses and livestock,” the union stated.
The incident has been reported to the Noklak district administration for relief operation, it stated.
In another incident, CSU said five paddy fields at Wonthai were washed away by the mudslide caused by haphazard dumping of earth of the recent road construction. “Describing the disaster, the paddy owners were saddened that they have completed the work recently in the paddy field, which was unfortunately washed away by the heavy rainfall. The affected owners are now left in high distress needing immediate help,” the union stated.
The union also informed that some roads connecting the village to Noklak were blocked by landslides. “One major incident happened at a place Ehoukeh king, Choklangan, making the areas inaccessible to the lone lifeline of the village,” CSU stated
While appealing to the authorities concerned to compensate those affected by the natural calamity, CSU also urged the contractors and firms to clear the road and make them pliable at the earliest.
Meanwhile, reports of landslides and rock-falls have also come from other districts including Phek and Mon. As per sources, a landslide near Sukruzu town under Phek district temporarily blocked the Chozuba- Zùnheboto road.
Sources also informed that the Namtola-Mon stretch of NH 702 at Yaling was cut off due to a rockslide on Sunday morning.
