Dimapur, June 27 (EMN): The lifelines of Ghokuto and viheto villages in Dimapur have been badly damaged following landslides that occurred along the 8 kilometer hilly road on June 24-25 last.

Incessant rain triggered the landslide on the only road connecting the two villages, information available to the media on Tuesday said.

G Shikavi Zhimo, head GB of Ghokuto village stated in a statement that the road had been severely affected in several places. In some places, the passage was blocked by mud that slid down from above the road while in some places the road has sunken several meters, making it impossible for vehicles to ply. The village leader stated that the road had been extensively damaged ‘due to lack of proper drainage along the road.’

Further, Zhimo stated that the people of the two villages were facing immense hardships especially students and sick people as they have had to trek for hours to reach Nihokhu. With the onset of the summer vacation for schools and colleges, besides the Tuluni festival, students going home from hostels will have to face difficulties getting to the villages, he stated.

Further, villagers will face difficulties in travelling to towns for ‘shopping for the festival unless the damaged road is repaired at the earliest time possible.’

The press statement maintained that the village had on its own been maintaining the road by deploying villagers and funds managed by the village’s council.

The road was constructed in 2012 as part of the PMGSY programme.
