KVK Zunheboto distributes potato seeds to farmers
DIMAPUR — The Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Nagaland University, Lumami campus, Zunheboto, distributed a total of 8000 kg of potato seeds to farmers from Keltomi village under in Aghunato sub-division, Tichipami and Surumi villages under Suruhoto sub-division and Aotsaklilmi village under Atoizu block, on Friday.
The KVK Zunheboto in a press release stated that it is playing an important role in improving the socio-economic condition of the farming communities.
“Potato is one of the major crops and is in high demand in every household. It is a good source of food and a 100 gm of potato contains 0.1 gm fat, sodium 10 mg, total carbohydrate 21 gm, protein 2.5 gm, calcium 15mg, iron 1.1mg and potassium 535 mg. To boost potato production in the district the KVK initiated a programme sponsored by IARI, New Delhi, to help the potato growers,” the release stated.
The release also informed that potato seeds of Kufri Jyoti varieties, which possess good yield potential of 20 tonnes per hectare and resistant to late and early blight disease of potato, were provided to the needy farmers.
“The main objective of this programme is to sensitise the farming community about quality potato production and preserve the seeds for the next season so that these farmers spent less money on procurement of quality seeds. Good quality seeds lead to less infestation to disease and pest and bumper harvest leading to increase in income and profitability,” it stated.
