Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Phek, in collaboration with the NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, conducted a one-day human resource development programme on “Scientific interventions for enhancing production and productivity in mithun farming” on January 18 at KVK Porba.
An update from KVK Phek stated that the programme was chaired by Nukusa T Vadeo, computer programmer, while Dr. T Esther Longkumer welcomed the resource persons and the Mithun farmers from nine villages under Phek district.
The resource person, Dr. Stephen Hanah, senior scientist at ICAR NRC on mithun, Medziphema, spoke on care and management of Mithun calf and advantages of semi intensive over extensive rearing of Mithun.
Dr. Kezhavituo Vupru, CTO, NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, elaborated on the scope of Mithun for draught power and also spoke on breeding management in mithun, while Dr. Hannah K Asangla, ACTO (Agronomy), KVK Phek, emphasised on different fodder cultivation and management for year round availability of fodder for mithun.
In the second session, Dr. H Rahman, former DDG (Animal Science) and regional representative for South Asia, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Pusa, appreciated and encouraged the farmers to strive well in mithun farming and emphasised on women empowerment.
Dr. Ravindra Sharma, former director of LUVAS, Hisar, spoke on the importance of mithun farming as it is the hallmark of the state and Dr. KK Baruah, former director of NRC on Yak, Dirang, advised the farmers to take keen interest in mithun farming and to work in coordination with the Institute.
Dr. Girish Patil S, director of NRC on Mithun, encouraged the farmers to form FPO and also to take the advantage of post harvest management. He also emphasised on organic farming for better income generation.
It was followed with a farmer-scientist interaction where the farmers actively participated and the trainees were given certificates and fodder maize seeds.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. N Haque, principal scientist.
Altogether, 134 participants attended the programme.
It stated that a mini exhibition was held at the campus.
