DIMAPUR — Kuki FC emerged as the champion of the second Peren District Football League (PDFL) and PDFA Cup 2024 after defeating Lekie Mtei FC in the final on Saturday at the New Jalukie village playground.

The tournament was organised by the Peren District Football Association (PDFA) in collaboration with the New Jalukie Super League (NSL) from August 17 to September 7, according to an update.

In a final match, Kuki FC, who had previously lost to Lekie Mtei FC in the league round, came back stronger to avenge their defeat with a 3-0 victory.

In a packed crowd of around 8,000 spectators, Kuki FC took the lead in the first half when Lamsanggin’s long-range shot from the right flank found the back of the net in the 33rd minute.

The league champion Lekie Mtei FC fought back to find an equaliser but missed several opportunities and failed to make any breakthrough.

In the second half, Lekie Mtei FC missed several chances to find an equaliser. Kuki FC gained momentum and pushed harder, doubling their lead in the 74th minute when Lamsanggin scored his second goal.

Kuki FC sealed their victory when Mangkholen found the back of the net by intercepting a cross inside the box amidst a melee of bodies during extra time. The Man of the Match award was presented to Khamlou by Lamsanggin Hangsing.

The closing ceremony was attended by Mughato Sumi, the vice president of the Nagaland Football Association and president of the Dimapur District Football Association, as the special guest.

In his address, Mughato highlighted that Peren is known for producing the highest number of talented football players in Nagaland and lauded the organisers for their successful management of the league despite the poor ground conditions.

He also emphasised that maintaining consistency is key to professionalism. The special guest urged elders and anyone who could provide financial support to the PDFA to step forward. He also attributed the decline in football standards in the state to issues of ‘ism’.

Mughato was accompanied by members of the Western Sumi Sports Association, Western Sumi Students’ Union, and Dimapur District Football Association.

Meanwhile, Kuki FC won the award for the highest number of fans, while Nchangram Lun FC received the award for the highest number of Instagram followers.
