Konyak Union cries for help as dengue cases overwhelms District Hospital Mon
DIMAPUR — The Konyak Union (KU) has expressed concern over the alarming rise in dengue cases in Mon district, saying that it has resulted in acute shortage of medical personnel and facilities.
“The situation has reached a critical point where urgent intervention is crucial and imperative,” read the press release from the union.
More than 50 dengue cases are registered daily, overwhelming the lone district hospital with 289 dengue-positive patients being currently admitted to the facility out of the total 678 cases, while 200 have been referred to facilities outside the district, said the KU.
“Tragically, this dengue outbreak has claimed more lives in our district than the most feared COVID-19 pandemic,” it said, while calling upon the state government and Health department to immediately deploy necessary resources and personnel to the district owing to the gravity of the situation.
The union also appealed to the Naga doctors and nurses to stand in solidarity with the people of Mon district during this critical time, saying that their “expertise and willingness to sacrifice for our community can make a significant difference in mitigating this crisis”.
“The Mon District Hospital is grappling with severe shortages of beds, with patients being forced to occupy corridors, verandas, and even wheelchairs due to lack of space. This dire situation necessitates swift action and resource allocation,” it stated.
It went on to inform that the KU and the Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) found out during their visit to the district hospital on Saturday that medical personnel, resources and equipment were urgently needed to address the unprecedented health crisis.
The unions said the district urgently needs the following:
1. Urgently require more than five doctors to handle the increasing patient load effectively.
2. More than 20 nurses are needed to provide comprehensive care to the dengue patients.
3. Five lab technicians are essential to expedite the testing and diagnosis process.
5. Immediate installation of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) machine.
4. To necessitate the immediate functional of District Nursing School, Mon.
