KOHIMA, OCTOBER 17 : Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has seized 25 bags of banned Myanmar food items from an NST bus at Phesama check gate on October 16.
The seized items included 10 bags of marinated plum, 10 bags of imli (tamarind) and five bags of sunflower seeds.
Talking to this correspondent, Sr. Enforcement Inspector Achu Yiese said despite official requests to the department, NST buses were caught transporting huge quantities of banned food products and other export/import items without obtaining permits from KMC.
With children very fond of Burmese food items, Yiese said these products are without any manufacturing and expiry dates which when consumed cause food poisoning, stomach ache and other related problems.
Therefore, he said, the KMC is trying its best to ban these food items from entering the local market by conducting surprise checking.
In this connection, he informed that the KMC has written to the Division Manager, NST, requesting him to do the needful by issuing directions to the NST staff to abstain from carrying/ferrying such illegal items.
He lamented that despite the official request, there has been no positive outcome, and requested the authority of the department to do the needful at the earliest. Yiese also said the KMC will continue to conduct checkings.
