Khemchand elected assembly speaker

Imphal, March 20:BJP legislator, Yumnam Khemchand Singh of Singjamei constituency in Manipur’s Imphal West district was elected as the Speaker of Manipur Assembly by a voice vote in the assembly on Monday. Khemchand beat former minister and Congress MLA Govindas Konthoujam of Bishnupur constituency.

54-year-old, Khemchand, a resident of Singjamei Yumnam Leikai Lairembi Maning in Imphal is also the president of All Manipur Tae-kwondo Association. He was elected from Singjamei seat after defeating his nearest rival and minister Irengbam Hemochandra by a margin of 1834 votes. Khemchand who lost to Hemochandra by 157 votes in 2012 assembly polls, got 9459 votes in March 4,2017 polls.
