DIPHU — The inaugural Karbi Knockout Tournament began at the playground of Diphu Government Boys Higher Secondary School on Thursday, organised by the East-West United Cricket Club (EWUCC), with 26 teams taking part in the event.

The opening match featured Kangtang Sports Club (KSC) facing off against the Joint Director of Health Services (JDHS).

KSC won the toss and elected to bat first in the 10-over match. They set a target of 92 runs, losing 8 wickets in the process. The pressure was on JDHS as they struggled to retain their wickets. Despite their efforts, JDHS could only manage to score 65 runs, losing all their wickets in 9 overs.

KSC emerged victorious by 26 runs and Songja Teron of KSC was named Player of the Match.

Rupkumar Terang, president of EWUCC, informed the media that the primary aim of organising the tournament is to promote youth participation in sports, discourage the use of intoxicating substances, and foster both physical and mental well-being.

The tournament was inaugurated by Prakash Sangma, chairman of the Minority Board of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), along with Angtong Engti, spokesman of the All Party Hill Leaders Conference.

It was informed that the victorious team will receive a cash prize of INR 15,000 along with a trophy, while the runner-up team will be awarded a cash prize of INR 8,000.
