Karbi Anglong prepares for NRC draft publication

Diphu, Dec. 30 (EMN): Ahead of the part publication of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) which is to expire on Dec. 31 2017, the deputy commissioner of Karbi Anglong Adil Khan on Sat. convened a press conference in his office. The press conference was to highlight the part-publication of the draft NRC by the Registrar General of Citizen Registration (RGCR) and the NRC of Assam on the same date of midnight Dec. 31 2017 in Karbi Anglong.
Pointing out that the process of NRC update in Assam was being undertaken according to provisions of the Citizenship Act of 1955 and the Citizenship Act of 2003 with the cut-off date of March 24 (midnight) 1971. It was decided to update the NRC of 1951 during a tripartite meeting between the government of India and the state government of Assam; and representatives of the All Assam Students Union on May 5 2005.
DC Adil Khan said that the part-publication of the NRC across Assam would be made on the expiry of Dec. 31 2017, at midnight. In Karbi Anglong, the District Registrar of Citizen Registration will be publishing the part publication of the draft.
From morning 8 a.m. of Jan. 1 people can go to the 42 NRC Seva Kendras to find their part publication of the draft NRC. The NRC Seva Kendras will make available the publication of draft NRC in parts of each villages and wards falling under their respective NSKs, Khan said.
Another draft NRC shall be published subsequently after completion of verification of rest of applications, which shall be the complete publication of draft NRC. Persons who do not find their names in the part publication of draft NRC to be published on December 31, 2017 midnight should not have any apprehension and panic as their verification is under process and will be complete soon. Verification of each individual is being done meticulously in a fair and objective manner to ensure that names of all genuine citizens as per cut-off date of March 24 1971 are included in NRC, Khan said.
Khan said it was possible that the names of some members of family or names of entire family members may not appear in part publication of the draft NRC. But such claims and objections can be done only after publication of the complete draft.
On being queried why the draft NRC was not published in roman script other than then Assamese, the deputy commissioner replied that as the electoral roll in Karbi Anglong was being published in Assamese the draft NRC was also being drafted in Assamese.
The deputy commissioner has informed that there were five ways to check names in a part of the draft NRC: walk into respective Seva Kendra centre on Jan. 1 from 8AM onwards; log in to WWW.nrcassam.nic.in, WWW.assam.mygov.in, WWW.assam.gov.in, WWW.homeandpolitical.assam.gov.in; send SMS by typing ARN<space> 21-digit ARN to 9765556555.
Further, an on-demand SMS can be availed by sending ARN<Space>21-digit ARN to 9765556555 after Dec. 31 2017. One may also call the toll free numbers 15107 from Assam or 18003453762 (from outside Assam).
In order to maintain peaceful situation in the region security has been arranged, and at every Seva Kendra Centre will have security, Khan added.
