KAAC to set up own police force

DIPHU — Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has decided to constitute its own police force for controlling illegal encroachers along the inter-district and inter-state border. The decision to this effect was taken during the 246th session of KAAC held at the session hall on Wednesday.

Coming out from the session, KAAC chief executive member (CEM), Tuliram Ronghang, told media persons that the decision for constituting Karbi Anglong police was discussed during the session.

“During the formation of erstwhile Mikir Hills District Council now KAAC under Sixth Schedule provision power was given to the KAAC for constituting town and village police. A resolution was adopted in the executive committee meeting and was placed before the august house in today’s session for discussion,” Ronghang said.

He informed that all the members in the house have accepted the proposal adding that a resolution would be adopted in the next session. He added that KAAC would constitute town and village police after receiving consent from the Governor.

Ronghang said the need to form Karbi Anglong police has arisen in order to control inter-state border issues that arise from time to time, to check illegal forest land encroachment and for the purpose of tax collection in the taxation department. He added that the strength of Karbi Anglong police initially would be 200 with inspector and sub-inspector posts.

Training for the 200 Karbi Anglong police would be conducted by the Assam government including the purchase of arms, Ronghang informed.

The 246th KAAC session was chaired by its chairman, Raju Tisso.
