[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Joint Students’ Coordinating Committee (JSCC) of six different student organizations of Manipur today said it would not allow implementation of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act, 2012 in Manipur University (MU).
The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act, 2012 has been modified from the earlier Amendment Act of the reservation system of 2006, Thangjam Premananda, convenor, JSCC said in a press meet at the office of Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) here.
Premananda said JSCC will deter MU’s plan to impose the Act in the varsity and demanded that the Act should be repealed.
He said the committee will bar implementation of the Act in MU because entrance test for the varsity has already been finished and now the admission has commenced.Premananda said though Manipur is not covered by the Sixth Schedule, the Act has included the state among the sixth Schedule status-states as the section 2 of the Act says, “Specified North Eastern Region means the area comprising of the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and the tribal areas of Assam.”
Under the Act, admission reservation of 50 percent is provided to general categories, 15 percent to Scheduled Castes, 27.5 percent to OBCs and 75 percent to Scheduled Tribes in Central Universities, he said.
But in the case of state Universities, he said, the general categories get 50 percent in admission, 2 percent by Scheduled Castes, 17 percent by OBCs and 31 percent by Scheduled Tribes.
Premananda warned that the committee will file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court of Manipur against MU for its announcement to impose the Act in the varsity.
