Diphu, Aug. 27 (EMN): Following a meeting between Assam and Meghalaya committee on Aug. 21 to solve disputes in six remaining border areas between the two states, the Joint coordination for Committee for Protection of Autonomy (JCCPA) said that the boundary issue in Karbi Anglong has already been resolved in 1951 and there is no need to re-open it again.
In a press conference held at the residence of Saising Rongpi, Rongmongve in Diphu on Saturday, the convenor, JCCPA, Kharsing Teron said that the two governments have claimed that they have already resolved in 6 areas and signed a pack on March 29, 2022. The second phase of discussion started on Aug. 1 last with regional committees to be constituted by respective governments. It is also learned that there will be members from Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to be included in the regional committee to be constituted by the Assam government.
‘Karbi Anglong boundary is well defined. The Khasis have reclaimed the areas from the report of a committee constituted in 1951. But we are very clear that the Block –I, Block –II, Khanduli and Psiar areas are very much within Karbi Anglong. We cannot accept the re-transfer of these areas to Meghalaya. The boundaries were properly defined after taking into consideration the historical background and opinions of both sides,’ said Teron.
Teron also said that the people cannot accept whatever decision is to be taken by the regional committees while informing that a consultative meeting will be convened with all social organisations, political leaders and conscious sections of people so that the issue can be raised together.
Meanwhile, the Member of the Autonomous Council (MAC) of the Chinthong MAC constituency, Avijit Kro said there are no border problems at the moment.
The MAC said that not an inch of Chinthong will go into Meghalaya while stating that the SP and DC of West Karbi Anglong have been asked to be alert of the recent development to resolve the boundary issue by the government of Meghalaya and Assam.
