International Yoga Day observed across Nagaland

DIMAPUR/KOHIMA — Several institutions in Nagaland observed International Yoga Day on Friday by organising yoga session on the theme “Yoga for self and society.”

Yoga Day is observed every year on June 21 to create global awareness and promote the numerous benefits of practicing yoga. It emphasises the importance of finding balance in the fast-paced lives and encourages harmony in the physical, mental and spiritual aspects.

YRS: The department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS) observed International Yoga Day at Indira Gandhi Stadium (IGS) in Kohima.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Seyiekhrietuo John, state nodal officer of AYUSH, briefed on the significance of the day to the participants and also stressed on the importance of practicing yoga.

Kelhouzasie Lawrence, yoga instructor of AYUSH Mission, led the participants in the yoga session.

The event was attended by the officers and staff of the department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS), Indira Gandhi Stadium academy students and other school students.

IAH Dimapur: Integrated Ayush Hospital (IAH), Dimapur, in collaboration with Regional Ayurveda Research Centre (RARC), Dimapur, observed International Yoga Day in the conference hall of District Hospital, Dimapur (DHD).

Speaking on the theme, Dr. Tiakaba Jamir, medical officer of DHD, stressed on the importance of yoga in daily life and requested the gathering to practice regularly to obtain the optimum benefits of yoga.

Several yoga protocols and exercises for upper and lower respiratory tracts, lower back ache, right postural for pregnant women, gastrointestinal tract and various relaxation posture etc. were demonstrated and executed by Dr. Sentila Aier and Tiatemsu Ao, yoga instructors.

The event was attended by staff of Integrated Ayush Hospital, Dimapur, medical officers under NHM/NAM, officer in-charge and staff from Regional Ayurveda Research Centre and supporting staff of District Hospital Dimapur.

IAH Chedema: The Integrated AYUSH Hospital, Razha, in Chedema under Kohima district observed International Yoga Day at its campus with the participation of all the staff.

In his welcome address, Dr. Kuokholie Savino, resident medical officer at IAH, spoke on the significance of day and appealed to practice yoga for physical, mental and spiritual well being. He also mentioned that yoga is more than a physical activity.

Also speaking at the programme, Dr. Neikievonuo Tsira, MO yoga and Naturopathy at IAH, emphasised the importance of yoga for self discipline which would lead to more conscious living, reduce negative behaviour and promoting sustainable practices.

Dr. Elvis Kithan, MO Yoga and Naturopathy at IAH, along with the yoga demonstrator guided the participants through various yogic postures, breathing exercises and techniques.

NU: The Nagaland University (NU), encompassing all its campuses in Lumami, Kohima, Medziphema and Dimapur, celebrated International Yoga Day, which saw enthusiastic participation from diverse group of around 500 people comprising officers, faculty members, staff members, scholars and students.

NU vice chancellor, Prof. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, who attended the programme as the chief guest, spoke on the significance of yoga in daily life and how yoga not only benefits individual well-being but also fosters a sense of community and societal harmony.

Dr. Harish Kumar Tiwari, deputy director of sports and organising secretary, demonstrated various yoga asanas and guided the participants through the physical and mental benefits of each posture.

Among others, university officials including its registrar Dr. Abemo, controller of examinations Yanrenthung Ezung, principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya and director of IQAC Prof. Dipak Sinha were present and actively engaged in the programme.

CBC: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) and Press Information Bureau (PIB), Kohima, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, observed the International Day of Yoga at the campus of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kohima (VKV).

The programme was attended by senior teacher of KVK, Rakesh Kumar; assistant director of PIB Kohima, K Sonikumar Singh; and head of office of Central Bureau Communication, P Sophie.

During the programme, speakers have deliberated on the benefits of practicing yoga and its importance for physical and mental being.

Charu Sarathe, physical education teacher, demonstrated various postures of yoga to the gathering and guided them during the yoga sessions.

Other highlights of the event included competitions on quiz, painting and best yoga demonstration. Prizes along with certificates were distributed to the winners at the end of the competitions.

SCC: The NCC unit of Sao Chang College, in collaboration with the Sports Committee and Yoga Club of the college, observed International Yoga Day in the college premises.

An update from the college stated that students numbering around 100 have participated in the programme. Speech on the importance of yoga exercise for mind and health was delivered by Dr. Santosh Kumar Singh, coordinator of Yoga Club.

LFI: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) and the Yuva Tourism Club of Livingstone Foundation International (LFI), in association with Livingstone Foundation Society and Breeze Women Welfare Association, observed the International Day of Yoga.

The day was observed with a mass yoga session led by a group of LFI students of various grades. During the session, the students and mentors imparted several yogic asanas including Vrikshasana (tree posture), Pada Hastasana (hands to feet posture), Ardha Chakrasana (half wheel posture), Trikonasana (triangle posture), Bhadrasana (firm/auspicious posture), Vajrasana (thunderbolt posture), Ardha Ustrasana (half camel posture), Ustrasana (camel posture), Sasakasana (hare posture), Uttana Padasana (raised feet posture), Ardha Halasana (half plough posture) and Pavana Muktasana (wind releasing posture).

PVHSS: Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, observed International Yoga Day with the participation of attended by the school secretary, principal, vice principal, teachers, students and guardians.

It stated that students from primary to secondary sections displayed various yoga Ashanas.

The school principal, Monoj Bhattacharjee, explained the importance of yoga to keep oneself healthy and stress-free, which can be practice by everyone irrespective of religion to keep the mind and body healthy.

MMC: The NSS unit of Mount Mary College (MMC) observed International Yoga Day with Luwang, a national player of Yoga Sana Sports Federation, and Kunjarani Sharma, yoga instructor and secretary of NYSF Sports Organisation, as the resource speakers.

The students learned about the importance of yoga and how it provides holistic approach to health and well being.
