International Women’s Day held across Karbi Anglong

Diphu, March 8 (EMN): International Women’s Day was observed by various women organisations and institutions across Karbi Anglong on Tuesday.

The Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA), a Karbi women organisation, celebrated the day by organising programmes at regional levels. The theme for the celebration globally was ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.’

Diphu regional committee held a programme at KNCA Central Committee office here. In the morning the KNCA flag was hoisted by president, Diphu regional committee, Kachep Tissopi and homage for departed members was led by vice president, Karbi So-arlo Kirsan Asong (KSKA), Bina Englengpi.

Later, a meeting was held where the KNCA leaders spoke on the importance of celebrating International Women’s Day. The leaders also spoke on the need to be aware of the rights of women and strengthening women organisations at various levels.  

The KNCA has been celebrating the International Women’s Day since 1994 till date, the leaders said.

There were more than 100 women from KNCA branches of Borlangpher, 24 km Lumding Road; Dhansiri and Singhason.

At Diphu Govt. College, the English department organised an International Women’s Day programme with various entertaining events led by the students.

HOD English department, Professor, Machurina Hussain said the International Women’s Day has been organised for ‘fun for girl students’.

‘By celebrating the day, we will be more aware that women will be safer, get respect and dignity. Of course in the Northeast region women are safer, but beyond that also women should be safe and get respect from the male society,’Hussain added.
