International Day of Older Persons observed in Kohima, Phek
DIMAPUR — The International Day of Older Persons was observed on October 1 at Kohima District Social Welfare conference hall on the theme “Ageing with dignity,” with CDPO Zholayi Neinu as the theme speaker.
District welfare officer Imlitongzuk Ao delivered the introductory remarks and chaired the programme, with an invocation by Nothurele, stated a press release.
During the event, the Distinguished Senior Citizen Award at the district level was presented to Pelhouru-o Suokhrie and Rovisienuo Nakhro. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by welfare inspector Zahebeituo Kire.
Furthermore, a screening and health camp was organised for senior citizens, during which the attendees were screened for hypertension and diabetes.
The Mobile Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC) team provided counselling and screening services for viral markers, including HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis.
A team from the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) screened beneficiaries for pulmonary conditions using a portable computerised X-ray machine.
The health camp was conducted by Dr. Vitsolu and Dr. Toboli Chishi Kire under the supervision of the chief medical officer, Kohima.

Khulazu Basa village in Phek also celebrated the International Day for Older Persons on October 1 at the village community hall.
Speaking on the occasion, retired Principal Director of School Education Zaveyi Nyekha emphasised the importance of promoting self-care and encouraged older people to learn how to love and take care of their bodies, according to an update.
He advised adopting healthy eating habits and maintaining balanced and nutritious eating patterns, and urged them to ensure consistent and adequate water intake. He also reminded older people to establish a healthy sleep routine for overall well-being and to engage in regular movement and exercise.
Emphasising the importance of educating the younger generation, he urged them to be aware of the various resources available for seniors and to promote self-help skills among the elderly.
Chairman of the senior citizens’ group Zühücho Rhakho delivered greetings, while Meshutsu Rhakho pronounced the invocation. Puduhü Rhakho led the programme.
