Inter University Sepaktakraw Women C’ship: Punjab University Chandigarh clinch 2 gold

KOHIMA — Punjab University Chandigarh (PUC) clinched gold medals in both the team and quadrant events in the All India Inter-University Sepaktakraw Women Championship, held from May 8 to the 10th at St. Mary’s College, Thrissur in Kerala.

Leading the triumphant team was striker Sezovelu Dozo, hailing from Nagaland, who served as the captain for Punjab University in the three-day championship organised by Calicut University, Kerala.

Punjab University won gold in the team event with a 2-1 set victory over Manipur University in the final match. In addition, they also secured another gold in the quadrant event with a 2-0 set win over Punjab University of Patiala in the final match.

The winning team representing Punjab University comprised Sezovelu Dozo, Nisha, Asmita Thapa, Monika Poonia, Himani, Heena Khan, Sushma Srivastav, Monika Rajput, Sanju, Chandramukhi, Rinku, Pooja, and Deepshika Rajput. Inderjit served as the team coach, with Monarita managing the team’s affairs.

A total of 15 universities participated in the championship, including Punjab University Chandigarh, RTMN University Nagpur, Kamaun University Nainital, Utkal University, Jain Narayan University, Assam University, Madav University, Punjab University Patiala, University of Calicut, Shri Kushal University, Kuvempu University, Gondwana University, MJP Rohilkhand, KIIT Bhubaneswar, and Manipur University.

Speaking to Eastern Mirror during her return journey by train to Punjab alongside her teammates, Dozo shared her joy her university securing two gold medals.

On the challenges facing formidable universities continuously in the hot weather, she expressed satisfaction that her university won the prestigious titles after several years.

Earlier, this newspaper has also interviewed Dozo and her three fellow teammates from Nagaland, who, alongside players from other states, formed the Indian women’s sepaktakraw team. They achieved commendable success, securing two gold medals at the 5th South Asian Sepaktakraw Championship held in February this year.
