KOHIMA, MARCH 13

A two-day inter-collegiate gospel beat contest got underway today in Kros College in Kohima town on Friday. The musical event is being staged under the theme ‘Celebration in Sync’. Twelve groups from in and around the state capital are participating in the competition, which is being held in three different categories-solo, choir and band.
Minister for Forest, Environment & Wildlife, Dr. Neikesalie Kire who graced the opening ceremony of the two-day event, said that music had no barriers or language. Every person appreciates it, he said. He said that music and singing, which have ‘soothing attributes’, have become a part of all occasions. The minister, who is a music enthusiast himself, observed with pride that Naga youths are ‘very talented in music’. The legislator expressed hope that the talents they have would be used in the right way.
“We Nagas tend to copy a lot of things especially from the western culture, but what we see is, we copy the wrong things and leave out the good things,” he lamented. Towards this, he challenged the youngsters to imbibe the positive aspects of the activity and leave the negative ones rather than the other way round.
While wishing the best to all the participants, Dr. Kire said although there can be only one winner in any competition, it was the participation that counted after all.
On day-one, competitions in solo and choir categories were staged while the competition for band disciplines would be staged on Saturday. The final rounds to all the categories will be staged on Saturday.
The judges for the competitions include singer and music instructor Noune Kuotsu, and Vizokho Nagi and Onophre Khazo, also music instructors.
