DIMAPUR — The internal quality assurance cell (IQAC) of Immanuel College in Dimapur organised a faculty development programme on Tuesday on ‘Professional ethics and the changing role of teachers in higher education in the context of NEP 2020’.

Dr. Buno Liegise, professor and head of the department of Education, Nagaland University, was the resource person for the event, held in the college conference hall, according to a press release.

Liegise, in her speech, underlined that education is a serious business and a nation’s fate solely lies in the hands of the teachers who are the agents of its building.

She stressed the importance of quality education and stated that teachers need to know their stand, constantly grow and align with the changing environment to provide quality education and bring home a positive impact.

She also mentioned that to keep in tune with NEP2020, teachers are expected to be facilitators by creating an environment that will help the students develop higher thinking order, creative thinking, problem-solving skills, critical analysis, etc. to ensure students’ understanding and appreciation of what they’ve learned.

Commenting on professionalism, Liegise pointed out the characteristics of competence and commitment in the teaching profession to ensure quality education. She reminded the teachers that teaching is a mission, a vocation that involves intellectual activity to provide personal and social services based on foundational disciplines and an extended period of preparation.

Reiterating on professional ethics, the resource person highlighted some  constructive approaches that involve knowledge competency, effective communication, research work, effective administration and upholding norms and ethical standards in the teaching community.

She added that teachers’ etiquettes are more important than the written norms, which go beyond classroom and thereby urged the teachers to avoid unethical habits that would question their moral accountability.

The event was chaired by Khrutalu Dozo, head of the department of Political Science, and Langnyei Imlichuba Phom, assistant professor, department of History, who pronounced the invocation. The principal, Th. Sharatchandra Singh, delivered the welcome address.
