Hema Chowdhary granted bail more than a month after arrest

Mumbai-based animal activist Hema Chowdhary has been granted bail on condition that she furnishes a local surety along with a bail bond of INR 1 lakh each signed by the accused and the bailer.

The Gauhati High Court has issued an order stating that she would be released only on fulfilment of the mentioned conditions before the learned Special Judge, ST and SC (POA), Kohima, adding that she should not leave the jurisdiction of the court without prior permission. It also stated that she should report to the IO once in a week till the filing of the charge-sheet.

The order stated that bail application was allowed and the CR was asked to send back to the special judge for further steps. It also mentioned she has been developing medical problems.

Chowdhary was arrested on July 17 from Mumbai by the Nagaland police for making derogatory and threatening remarks against the Nagas on social media. She was then brought to Nagaland and produced before the special judge, SC and ST (POA), Kohima, on charges of cyber crime.
