Heavy rainfall cuts off villages in Shamator district

DIMAPUR — Unprecedented heavy rainfall which struck Shamator district on April 19 and 20 has cut off 10 villages besides destroying several houses and properties.

In an update, the deputy commissioner of Shamator, Y Chingyak Konyak, informed that power and cellular connectivity have been severely affected, while scores of culverts and minor bridges were washed away. He added that landslides and mudslides have blocked most of the roads connecting the district.

The DC informed that three major bridges namely Langa Bridge- connecting Shamator headquarters and Tuensang, Muksuke Bridge- connecting Chessore sub-division with Tuensang and Shipong Bridge-connecting Shamator headquarters with Mangko EAC circle have been severely damaged and on the verge of collapse. He added that hundreds of terrace fields and fisheries have been washed off.

Meanwhile, he informed that many vehicles returning from election duty are still stranded in various parts of the district. He added that the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is on the job but lack of machineries and resources have severely impeded road clearance and other restorative works in the district.

The deputy commissioner and chairperson of Niuland District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Sara S Jamir, on Tuesday gave away emergency relief to the families affected by natural calamity.

Report stated that thunderstorm and heavy rainfall ravaged many houses and rendered many families homeless besides causing damage to power and communication lines, crops, water logging, uprooting of trees, etc.
