Guwahati, Dec. 2 (PTI): The Gauhati High Court today directed the Assam government to submit the process for rehabilitation of people who have been evicted from the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary here this week.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Singh and Justice Manojit Bhuyan granted two months time to the government to submit its action on the process.
The court on Wednesday suspended the ongoing eviction drive on residential areas in the sanctuary considering a plea made by the state government due to school examination of children and the winter season.
The court, however, permitted the government to carry on the eviction drive against commercial establishments inside the sanctuary.
As per Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s direction, Additional Advocate General Devajit Saikia on November 29 had made a verbal submission before the court regarding suspension of the eviction drive and the court allowed it.
The eviction drive started on November 27 on the orders of the high court to free the sanctuary of encroachers.
Meanwhile, Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration that conducted the eviction drive today said that suitable arrangements have been made for the students of the evicted families.
Arrangements have been made so that students are able to appear for the examinations and study materials will also be provided to them, Deputy Commissioner Kamrup (M) district Dr M Angamuthu said.
