Govt. schools still struggling to bridge gap with private schools

Dimapur, June 5 (EMN): The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) declared the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination results on May 31.

Compared to the last five years’ pass percentage of HSLC, the overall performance dipped to 64.69%, the lowest in six years, according to the board.

This year, government schools recorded a pass percentage of 36.62%, while private schools recorded 82.08%.

In terms of district-wise performance for government schools, Kohima district with a total of 31 government schools topped the table with a percentage of 57%, followed by Mokokchung at 54% and Peren at 52%.

Nagaland’s aspiration district Kiphire with 13 government schools was at the bottom with only 24 students qualifying the HSLC examination out of 301.

Noklak with four government schools had only 18 students qualifying the examination. (Refer table 1)

In respect of private schools, Kohima district with 70 schools topped with a pass percentage of 88%, followed by Zunheboto at 84%.

Dimapur, which has 149 private schools, had a pass percentage of 77%. Despite having only three private schools, Noklak district did fairly well with a pass percentage of 61%. (Refer table 2)

A total of 90 schools secured 100% pass percentage, out of which 78 are private schools and 12 government schools. This year, 34 schools recorded nil results, out of which 33 are government schools and one is a private school.

Meanwhile, in HSSLC examination, 17,121 candidates were enrolled and the overall pass percentage in Arts stream was 80.64%, Commerce stream 82.28% and Science stream 88.24%. As many as 16 institutions under Arts stream, 10 institutions under Science stream and four under Commerce stream secured 100% pass result.

The overall pass percentage of government institutions in Arts stream was 81.39% while it was 88.7% in private institutions. In Commerce stream, overall pass percentage was 87.5% and 87.2% for govt. and private institutions respectively.

In Science stream, the overall pass percentage was 87.64% and 92% for govt. and private institutions respectively.
