DIMAPUR — The Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan, attended the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) convocation ceremony 2023 at Tharamani, Chennai, on November 18.

According to a press release from Raj Bhavan, the governor, while speaking at the event, remarked that they are poised to redefine the world, set new trends, and infuse fabrics with creativity and innovation.

Mentioning that NIFT‘s journey since its inception in 1986, aimed at supplying the global textile and apparel industry with professional human resources, has been nothing short of remarkable, he expressed his delight at the expansion of NIFT to 18 full-fledged campuses across India, including NIFT Chennai, and commended NIFT for its contributions to society.

Addressing the graduates, the governor highlighted that NIFT Chennai, which started in 1995, has now set a high standard for fashion education in the nation, securing an enviable position among the top five fashion institutes.

Further, he mentioned that promoting traditional khadi and handloom represents not only empowerment but also a commendable tribute to the nation’s heritage, a sentiment illuminated during the Khadi Mahotsav.

The governor praised NIFT Chennai for being a pioneer in establishing a financially self-sustaining campus, which significantly contributes to the fashion industry, government machinery, and craft sector through a variety of domestic and international projects and consultancies.

He told the graduates that they were entering an industry brimming with opportunities and encouraged them to weave stories, create magic, and produce art that speaks. He also emphasised that with great power comes great responsibility, urging them to be mindful creators in their professional pursuits.

The governor stated that the fashion industry possesses the potential to effect significant positive changes and underscored the importance of sustainable practices, adding that the art created should reflect not only their creativity but also care and respect for the environment.

He urged the graduates to remember that they are more than just designers or fashion enthusiasts; they are ambassadors of culture, trendsetters, and innovators at the forefront of change.

The governor encouraged the graduates to uphold the vast and diverse cultures of India while simultaneously pushing boundaries in the global fashion domain.

During the ceremony, he awarded gold medals and citations to 37 meritorious students and conferred degrees on 282 graduates.
