Gorkha community celebrates ‘Bhanu Jayanti’

Dimapur, July 13 (EMN): Gorkha Students’ Union Dimapur (GSUD) celebrated ‘Bhanu Jayanti,’ in commemoration of 207th birth anniversary of Adikavi  Bhanu Bhakta Acharya on July 13 at Nepali Basti.

‘Bhanu Jayanti’ is annually celebrated by the Gorkha community around the world in remembrance of Bhanubhakta Acharya, who is known as ‘Father of Nepali language.’ Bhanu Jayanti is celebrated on the 29th day of the month of Ashad according to Nepali calendar, an update from the union stated.

It added that only the union members and few selected Gorkha leaders along with winners of the online competition were present during the programme.

It stated that the founding chairman of DGU and BJP state executive member, Kumar Subba, and the president of NPF minority wing, Bishnu Bhattacharjee, attended the function as the special guest and special invitee respectively.

Besides felicitating students on their academic excellence, awards were given to ‘The Chronicles Band’ for music, Hem Chettri for sports (crricket), Jacob Sundas for humanity work, Anjana Limbu for sports (badminton), winners of the online art and dance competition, and Jiwan Rai for journalism (NLTV).

In a related programme, the Gorkha community in Kohima observed the 207th birth anniversary of Aadi Kabi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya by following all laid down norms against Covid-19.

Speaking on the occasion, the GPPK president Santu Thapa recounted the different works of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya. Thapa stated that Acharya devoted his entire life for the uplift of the community in general.

Taking the opportunity, GPPK president also spoke on Covid pandemic and asked everyone to strictly follow the laid down SoP and maintain Covid appropriate behaviours to save themselves and the humanity. He also asked the members to take Covid vaccination.

The programme began with garlanding and lighting lamp on the portrait of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya. Bala Khawash also shared on the life sketch of Acharya, while the vote of thanks was delivered by its general secretary, Susila Limbu.
